SUMMARY:2026 Virtual Knowledge Forum on Sustainable Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:The Food\, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN)\, in collaboration with partners\, will host a Virtual Knowledge Forum on Sustainable Food Systems from 20–22 May 2026. The forum is part of the Strengthening Evidence-Based Policy Practice for Sustainable Food Systems (StEPPFoS) project\, which aims to bridge the gap between research evidence and policy implementation in Africa’s agri-food systems. \nThe online forum\, themed “Linking Evidence\, Policy\, and Action\,” will bring together policymakers\, researchers\, development partners\, private sector actors\, and civil society organizations to discuss practical solutions to Africa’s food and nutrition security challenges. Discussions will focus on strengthening evidence-based policymaking and fostering collaboration to support sustainable and inclusive food systems across the continent. Key thematic discussions will include nutrition and food safety\, value addition\, continental trade and market access\, financing for agriculture\, youth and gender inclusion\, digital innovation\, technology transfer\, and climate adaptation for resilient food systems. \nThe forum will also feature a Virtual Innovation Exhibition\, where innovators\, researchers\, farmer organizations\, and technology developers will showcase practical solutions such as digital agriculture tools\, climate-smart technologies\, and community-driven initiatives that strengthen food systems. These sessions will combine demonstrations\, evidence of impact\, and interactive discussions aimed at encouraging collaboration and scaling successful innovations. \nThe initiative is implemented through a broad partnership that includes organizations such as FARA\, ASARECA\, CORAF/WECARD\, AFAAS\, ECDPM\, and Stichting Wageningen Research\, alongside African and European research institutions.Expected outcomes include stronger policy alignment across national and regional frameworks\, strategies to mobilize investments for sustainable food systems\, and a synthesized knowledge resolution outlining key commitments and actions to advance food systems transformation in Africa. \nRegister Here: Meeting Registration – Zoom

DESCRIPTION:Overview: The StEPPFoS Summer School is a five-day intensive programme held in Entebbe\, Uganda\, from the 25 to 29 of May 2026. The school aims to equip participants with advanced economic modelling skills to describe\, investigate and interpret the future challenges for Africa’s agricultural sector and food security\, with particular focus on climate change. \nThe curriculum balances theoretical lectures on economic shocks within the FNSSA sector with hands-on practical sessions using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model and a farm-level microeconomic model. The programme includes parallel sessions for each model type\, tailored to participants’ backgrounds and preferred modelling approaches. \nThe StEPPFoS Summer School is organised in the frame of the Pan-African Network for Economic Analysis of Policies (PANAP)\, co-hosted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA)\, combining academic expertise and policy-oriented research to deliver a rigorous\, applied training experience. \nWho can Apply \nThe summer school is targeted for PhD students and early-career researchers from Africa. \nApplications will be evaluated based on the following criteria. SUMMARY:Food Sovereignty in Africa: Scaling Agroecology  and Ecological Organic Agriculture for Resilient  and Sustainable Agrifood Systems in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Context and Background\nAfrica’s food systems are under increasing pressure from multiple\, interconnected challenges\, including\nclimate change\, land degradation\, biodiversity loss\, soil fertility decline\, and persistent food and nutrition\ninsecurity. Rising temperatures\, erratic rainfall patterns\, and extreme weather events are undermining\nagricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods across the continent. At the same time\, unsustainable\nland-use practices have contributed to declining soil fertility\, which threatens the resilience of Africa‘s food\nsystems. There is thus a growing recognition of the need for transformative approaches beyond incremental\nimprovements in productivity to address the root causes of vulnerability and unsustainability. Agroecology\nhas emerged as a transformative pathway that integrates ecological principles\, scientific knowledge\, and\nlocal practices to build resilient\, inclusive\, and sustainable agricultural systems.\nThe Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative (EOAI) since 2011\, a continental initiative of the African Union\,\naims at promoting ecological and organic agriculture practices across Africa to enhance smallholder farm\nproductivity and food security. The initiative focuses on integrating ecological practices into national\nagricultural systems and policies and is supported by the African Union Commission (AUC). Across the\ncontinent\, agroecology and EOA are gaining momentum through farmer-led innovations\, research initiatives\,\nand supportive policy dialogues. However\, scaling agroecology and EOA requires stronger alignment between\nscience\, policy\, and practice\, as well as enhanced collaboration among stakeholders.\nAcross Africa\, diverse agroecological innovations are being developed and implemented by farmers\,\nresearchers\, and development practitioners. These include integrated soil fertility management\, agroforestry\nsystems\, diversified cropping and livestock keeping\, community-based seed systems among many. Evidence\nfrom research and practice indicates that such approaches can improve soil and crop productivity\, enhance\nresilience to climate shocks\, reduce dependence on external inputs\, and contribute to improved nutrition\noutcomes However\, despite these promising results\, the adoption and scaling of agroecology remain limited.\nKey barriers include fragmented knowledge systems\, insufficient investment\, weak policy support\, and limited\ncoordination among stakeholders.\nAddressing these challenges requires stronger partnerships and more effective integration of science\, policy\,\nand practice. Collaborative efforts are needed to generate robust evidence\, develop context-site-specific\ninnovations\, and create enabling environments for agroecology to flourish. In this regard\, continental and\ninternational organizations and Programmes such as Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA)\, Research\nInstitute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL)\, European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC)\, Ecological Organic\nAgriculture Initiative (EOAI-Africa)\, Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT)\, Network of Organic Agriculture Researchers\nin Africa (NOARA)\, DeSIRA+ Initiative\, the Regional Multi actor Research Networks in Africa on Agroecology\n(RMRN) and the Knowledge Centre for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Africa (KCOA)\, the EOA-I chaired\nby the African Union Commission\, and the African Organic Agriculture Network (AfrONet) play a critical role in\nadvancing research\, fostering innovation\, and facilitating multi-stakeholder engagement across scales.\nThe Africa Agricultural Science Week (AASW)\, under the theme “Innovations and Partnerships for Resilient and\nSustainable Agrifood Systems in Africa”\, which is scheduled for 27th – 30th July 2026 in Abuja\, Nigeria\, offers\na strategic platform to advance the agroecology agenda. The Parallel Session brings together key actors from\nresearch\, policy\, private sector\, and relevant stakeholders to exchange knowledge\, showcase innovations\,\nand forge partnerships. Within this context\, a dedicated parallel session on agroecology is both timely and\nnecessary to highlight its contribution as a science-based\, innovation-driven approach to agrifood systems\ntransformation.\nIn this regard\, the RMRNs—comprising of RMRN-EA in East Africa\, RADIUS in West Africa\, and RAENS in Southern\nAfrica\, FARA\, FiBL and KCOA\, the EC-JRC\, RUFORUM\, the DeSIRALift+ Initiative\, NOARA\, EOAI and AfrONet\nwill co-organize a Parallel Session during the Africa Agriculture Science Week 2026. The Parallel Session is\nscheduled to take place on 28th July 2026. The proposed Parallel Session aligns with the Conference Theme:\nInnovations and Partnerships for Resilient and Sustainable Agrifood Systems in Africa and sub-theme 2:\n“Climate Resilient Agrifood Systems: Improving Productivity\, Resilience and Sustainability” of the Science\nWeek. SUMMARY:Advancing the Kampala CAADP Agenda through Evidence Based Policy Research
DESCRIPTION:Bridging Science\, Policy and Implementation for Scaled Agricultural Transformation — Insights from Members of the Pan-African Network for the Analysis of Economic Policies (PANAP-StEPPFoS) \nBackground \nStEPPFoS\, FARA\, CSIR-STEPRI\, KIPPRA\, CIRES\, ECDPM\, ASARECA The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) remains Africa’s flagship framework for driving agricultural transformation\, food security\, and economic growth. The new phase of the CAADP\n(Kampala CAADP) discussions and commitments have emphasized the need for strengthened accountability\, data-driven decision-making\, and comprehensive policy processes to accelerate progress toward the Kampala Declaration targets and beyond. Despite significant progress under CAADP\, implementation across many African countries remains constrained by fragmented institutional mandates\, weak coordination between research and policy processes\, limited use of data and analytics in decision-making and inadequate translation of research into actionable policies. In addition\, national and subnational planning processes often operate in silos\, limiting the effectiveness of integrated food systems’ transformation. Addressing these gaps requires strengthening the science-policy interface and ensuring that evidence generated by research networks such as PANAP is systematically\nembedded into policy design\, implementation and monitoring frameworks. In this context\, the Pan-African Network for Economic Analysis of Policies (PANAP) members\, through the StEPPFoS Project have undertaken a range of policy studies which address priority areas aligned with the\nevolving CAADP agenda. These priority areas include sciencepolicy interface\, climate resilience\, agricultural research financing\, regional trade\, and inclusive agrifood systems. These studies are aimed at supporting countries to domesticate the Kampala CAADP Strategies to achieve the Agenda 2063. Importantly\, the emerging Kampala CAADP agenda places strong emphasis on implementation\, accountability and measurable results. This requires moving beyond projectbased approaches toward programmatic\, system-wide interventions anchored in national development frameworks\, including Agenda 2063\, National Agricultural Investment Plans (NAIPs) and country-level strategies. PANAP’s work provides a critical evidence base to support this transition by offering policy-relevant insights\, analytical tools and cross-country learning. The Agricultural Science Week\, hosted by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA)\, provides a strategic platform to position PANAP-generated evidence within the broader Kampala CAADP process.
